COURSE DESCRIPTION
This class is designed for prospective schoolteachers to integrate a wide variety of technologies into their curriculum. This course provides hands-on experiences with the possibilities and potentials of technology for education. Instead of teaching about the technology, it focuses on how teachers can apply technology effectively to promote students’ learning including problem solving, communication and critical thinking skills. Through group and/or individual projects, prospective teachers will develop lesson plans that they will include in an electronic portfolio demonstrating their understanding of effective technology infusion. They can then take this portfolio out into their own classrooms.

OBJECTIVES
Course objectives are taken from New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for Technology (8.1) and are also aligned to the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards and the Partnership for the 21st Century Skills framework.
Prospective teachers in the course will:
1. Demonstrate appropriate operations and applications of emerging technology for schools
2. Utilize technology to enhance creativity and innovation
3. Demonstrate the use of digital tools to foster communication and collaboration
4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility
5. Use digital tools to promote research and information literacy
6. Develop lessons that promote critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making

GRADES
Projects (60% of grade)
Multiple projects will be completed throughout this course. The mean grade of all your projects will account for 60% of your final grade. Projects will assess the learning of content supported by the course goal and objectives. Some projects will be completed for a team grade and others for individual grades.

Tech Tips (30% of grade)
Each team will present four Tech Tips to the class. The mean grade of the four Tech Tips will account for 30% of your final grade. Tech Tips will demonstrate the skills and knowledge in integrating technology for learning in the classroom. Tech Tips will be evaluated according to the successful:
· integration of technology for learning
· clarity of presentation
· assessment of students learning of the Tech Tip
· posting to BlackBoard, prior to the date of the Tech Tip, answering the following:
Ø Why did your team select this Tech Tip for presentation?
Ø Explain how your Tech Tip is an example of integrating technology for student learning.
Ø Write a paragraph description of the Tech Tip.
Ø Explain how you will assess the students learning of the Tech Tip.

Class Participation (10% of grade)
Class participation includes attending class on time and prepared and actively participating in class. This portion of your grade will generally reflect your diligence in contributing to the class. If you have a question about this metric, feel free to sit down and discuss it with me.

Tardiness
Attendance is taken at the start of each class. For each time you are marked tardy, your final grade will be lowered by half a letter grade.

Absences
Missing class will adversely affect your grade, as you will miss content, the team projects, discussions, and presentations. Missing one class will bring your final grade down one full letter grade. Missing two classes will bring your final grade down two full letter grades. Missing three classes will bring your final grade down three full letter grades. Missing four classes will bring your final grade down four full letter grades.

Submitting Coursework
Any assignment not delivered to the instructor in accordance with the specified medium required for the assignment on the due date will not be accepted for a grade and all team members (for a team project) or the team member (for an individual project) will receive an F (0%) for the assignment. Incomplete assignments will not be accepted for a grade and all team members (for a team project) or the team member (for an individual project) will receive an F (0%) for the assignment. All assignments are required to follow the written work requirements or the assignment will lose a letter grade. In particular, hard copies should have a cover page and be stapled etc.

All submitted or uploaded work will follow APA requirements. All work will include a cover page with the name of the project/assignment, student name(s) (first & last), team name, date submitted, course title, and instructors name. Except for the cover page, there should be a running heading at the top right of the page with your last name, first name, and page number. The title page counts as page 1, but do not show the page number on the title page. The page following the title page is page 2 etc. Leave the right margin “ragged” (not justified), use a 12-point font, double-spaced throughout, and allow one-inch margins. Make sure to cite all work and give a list of references. Students are also required to staple their work before handing in hard copies.

Teamwork & Collaboration
Students are required to actively and thoughtfully participate, collaborate, share information, and produce deliverable projects with peers. It is understood that some teams may not have the natural tendency to work well together. However, it is expected that each team of students negotiate through any and all obstacles that may interfere with successfully completing projects and assignments. In the event a team cannot work well together, students will have the option to vote for the separation of grades based upon evidence that the team is not working well together. If grades are separated, students will still be responsible for all team projects and required to work together as a team. The instructor will be involved in this process and historically, team members that are unable to work together tend to earn lower grades in this class.

Extra Credit
There will not be any extra credit given out for this course.

Email Communication
Students are required to use their Stockton student email account when communicating with the instructor. The instructor will only read and reply to Stockton student email accounts.

Plagiarism
Will not be tolerated and will result in a failing grade (0%) for the assignment and institutional involvement.

Academic Accommodations
If a student believes they may qualify for course adaptations or accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and/or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, it is the responsibility of the student to immediately, but no later than the second class session, notify the instructor of the adaptation or accommodation. For more information contact the Learning Access Program (LAP) at 609-652-4988.

ASSIGNMENTS
(The professor reserves the right to change the assignments in accordance with the needs of the class.)
Project Descriptions
The general descriptions of the projects for the course appear below. A more detailed description of each of the projects will be handed out with a rubric for how the project will be graded. Additional projects will be implemented as needed.

Project 1
The goal of project 1 is for students to demonstrate and model the use of technology tools in creating an ePortfolio of their course work. Using Publisher, Google Sites or Wikispaces and a digital camera, scanner, Microsoft Office, and Inspiration, students will create an ePortfolio for the course.

Project 2
The goal of project 2 is for students to create a virtual learning environment that prompts students to collaborate and use information literacy skills. Students will utilize Web 2.0 technologies in promoting critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, and promote digital citizenship and responsibility.

Project 3
The goal of project 3 is for students to utilize emerging applications in the creation of a WebQuest that promotes research and information literacy, critical thinking, and problem solving.

COURSE MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS

No Required Textbook

Required Resources

  1. Starting the first class, you are required to bring a memory stick (flash drive) of one gigabyte or more to every class. Put your name on your memory stick so in the event you forget the memory stick in the computer you will increase the chances of getting it back. In order to decrease the chances of losing your work, back up your work from your memory stick to your home or office computer hard drive daily.
  2. You are also required to have a working stk number or user name and password before the first class. Starting the first class, you will be accessing your Stockton storage area using this information. You will also need this information to utilize black board.
  3. You are required to complete all assignments on Microsoft Office 2007 (using Microsoft Office 2003 or later versions may cause problems and inevitably require you to redo assignments). If you do not have the software on your personal computer, it is your responsibility to find time to utilize the available computer labs at Stockton.
  4. Purchase a Wikispace Plus Plan prior to our first class. Go to Wikispaces at http://www.wikispaces.com and purchase the Plus Plan for at least four months $5/month or $50/year).
